The Mayors of Tallinn and Helsinki kick off the international campaign Save Our Sea

The Mayors of Tallinn and Helsinki are inviting all cities around the Baltic Sea to join the international campaign Save Our Sea, which takes place from 31 August to 16 September 2023.

Tallinn and Helsinki have always been proud to be coastal cities and good partners. In recent years, they have both worked hard to open up their cities to the sea. There is an urgent need to raise awareness of the vulnerability of the Baltic Sea! We must engage communities and organisations, lead cleanup actions and other environmental activities, and highlight the new technologies that businesses and scientists from Baltic Sea countries have developed to address marine pollution. Far too much plastic and other waste still finds its way into the sea. Removing litter from beaches and other coastal areas is a significant step to help raise awareness and improve the quality of the sea and its ecosystem.

Save Our Sea is a macro-regional campaign taking place for the first time this year. Baltic Sea Day, on 31 August, is an initiative launched in 2019 by the John Nurminen Institute, Helsinki, which is dedicated to raising awareness about the Baltic Sea environment. The city of Tallinn, European Green Capital 2023, is home to one of the biggest global environmental movements—World Cleanup Day, led by the global movement Let’s Do It World. This year, World Cleanup Day is on 16 September. Let’s Do It World is the main partner for the Save our Sea campaign.

The city of Tallinn and Let’s Do It World will be introducing the campaign concept and engaging the Baltic Sea region cities and organisations in the Save Our Sea campaign, via an online webinar for contact people held on 30 May at 10.00 CET.
